The use of these hot spring waters in this area is known since the Pre-Historic days but  the main  remains belong to Roman time. At a later stage in the XII and century the 1st Portuguese King himself recognized the importance of the healing properties of these thermal waters which site was again largely developed by King Manuel I in the XVI century. After a quite period of development the main impulse and modernisation was given once more in 1884, when the  Town Hall of S. Pedro do Sul decided to build a new hospital to replace Royal Hospital that was then already about 300 years old. A new Bath was then built and visited by the queen, on account of some physical problems, with excellent results on her treatment. In honour to the royal stay the Bath  was then renamed as  “Caldas da Rainha D. Amélia”.
Among the therapeutic recommendations these waters are famous for treating various health conditions such as:   several diseases of the respiratory and nervous system, rheumatism and  orto-traumatologic problems.
The 20th  century brought more projection to the site that began being known as “Termas de S. Pedro do Sul”.
Finally the first decade of the 21st century brings Termas de S.
